The Leadership Speakers Bureau brings health-system pharmacy leaders to pharmacy campuses as a resource to explore with students the importance of leadership development as a necessary part of their professional development. The Center for Health-System Pharmacy Leadership launched this initiative in 2009 in response to the expressed need of pharmacy students.
The Speakers Bureau provides a forum for students to connect their own leadership aspirations with those of an established leader. It begins to fill a void that currently exists in student exposure to leadership issues and begins the process of developing their own leadership approach as change agents in pharmacy practice.
The Speakers Bureau is an alliance involving ASHP Foundation staff, ASHP staff and members. The Student Forum Leadership Development Advisory Group, composed of ASHP Foundation and ASHP staff along with outside experts, provided guidance and direction for the initiative. The presentation is hosted at pharmacy schools and colleges by Student Societies of Health-System Pharmacy, working with their ASHP faculty liaisons. ASHP state affiliates may serve as a possible source for potential speakers.
Objectives
The Leadership Speakers Bureau’s primary objectives are to:
• Demonstrate through sharing examples from a health-system pharmacy leader’s career that leadership is not an option for professional growth; it is an obligation.
• Differentiate a leadership position verses leadership as a personal development goal.
• Dispel the myth that leadership can only be exercised by individuals who are in certain positions in the organizational chart.
• Promote the concept of leadership as something learned over the course of a professional career, similar to the way that clinical skills are learned.
• Demonstrate leadership is a learned attribute obtained through formal leadership educational opportunities and informal processes, and must be practiced to be successful.
